What this part is — and what it isn't
The Maxim Integrated MAX186CCAP+ is a complete 12-bit Data Acquisition System (DAS) that integrates an 8-channel multiplexer, a successive-approximation ADC, and a serial interface into a single 20-SSOP package. It samples at 133k samples per second, communicates over MICROWIRE, QSPI, or SPI, and requires a dual ±5V supply — not a single 5V rail. The 0°C to 70°C temperature grade suits commercial and indoor industrial environments, not extended-range or automotive applications.
Dual supply — the single-supply question
This part runs on a dual ±5V supply. If your system only has a single 5V rail, the MAX186CCAP+ will not work without generating a negative rail. The dual-supply architecture gives it a ±5V input range, which is useful for bipolar sensor signals, but it adds a power-supply design step that a single-supply ADC skips. Check your board's available rails before committing the BOM line.
