500 mA LDO with exposed-pad thermal management
The MAX1792EUA33+T is a positive-output LDO regulator from Analog Devices, rated for 500 mA continuous output current. The 8-uMAX-EP / 8-uSOP-EP package includes an exposed pad that conducts heat to the PCB copper plane — for a 500 mA rail, the thermal resistance drops significantly when the pad is soldered to a dedicated ground plane area. Output voltage is configurable: the fixed version delivers 3.3 V, while the adjustable version lets an external resistor divider set the output up to 5 V from a 1.25 V reference. The Enable and Reset control pins give the system designer a clean power-up sequence and a monitored output flag.
Dropout and quiescent current at the rail
Maximum dropout voltage is 0.25 V at the full 500 mA load — the input rail needs only 3.55 V to maintain a regulated 3.3 V output. This headroom margin matters when the supply is a 3.6 V lithium cell nearing end-of-discharge. Quiescent current is 250 µA typical, which is moderate for a 500 mA LDO — not the lowest-Iq part for always-on sensor nodes, but appropriate for a regulated rail that powers a mixed-signal load where the 250 µA is a small fraction of the total system draw. The single regulator channel serves one local rail per package.
Industrial temperature grade and protection set
The protection block includes over-current and over-temperature shutdown, so the regulator survives a sustained short on the output or a high-ambient fault condition without damage.
