What the 500 mA output and 0.25 V dropout mean for your rail
The MAX1792EUA33+ is a single-output LDO regulator from Analog Devices, delivering 500 mA continuous current with a maximum dropout of 0.25 V at full load. That 250 mV headroom means the input rail must stay at least a quarter volt above the output voltage across the load range — for the fixed 3.3 V version, the input needs to be above 3.55 V worst-case to keep regulation. The output is configurable: the fixed version is set to 3.3 V, but the part also supports an adjustable output down to 1.25 V via external resistors. This makes it a drop-in for both fixed-rail 3.3 V designs and adjustable post-regulation stages.
Temperature range and protection for harsh environments
The 125°C upper limit means it can sit near a hot processor or in an engine-bay ECU without derating — the junction temperature stays within the silicon's safe operating area. Built-in over-current and over-temperature protection shut the regulator down before the die exceeds its thermal limit. The Enable and Reset control features let a supervisor or MCU sequence the rail — pull Enable low to shut off the output, and monitor the Reset pin for power-good status.
Housed in an 8-uMAX-EP (exposed-pad) package, also known as 8-uSOP-EP, with a 3.00 mm body width. The datasheet's recommended footprint includes a pad under the package with vias to a ground plane to keep RthJA below 50°C/W. Supplied in tube packaging, not tape-and-reel. For automated pick-and-place, plan for tube feeders or a bulk-to-tape conversion — the tube quantity is typically 50 or 100 pieces per tube depending on the supplier's cut.
If the application requires sub-100 µA idle current, a different LDO family would be a better fit.
