What this LDO brings to the rail
The Maxim MAX1792EUA18+T is a single-output, positive-voltage LDO regulator designed for applications that need a clean, regulated supply from a 5.5 V max input rail. It delivers up to 500 mA with a quiescent current of 250 µA, making it a fit for always-on peripherals in industrial control, automotive electronics, and telecom equipment where the load doesn't justify a switcher but the thermal budget still matters. The output is configurable as adjustable down to 1.25 V or fixed at 1.8 V, covering common core and I/O voltages for MCUs, FPGAs, and sensors.
Output voltage range — adjustable or fixed
The output can be set anywhere from 1.25 V up to 5 V using an external resistor divider, or used as a fixed 1.8 V regulator without extra components. That 1.8 V fixed option is a direct match for 1.8 V I/O banks on modern FPGAs and low-power MCUs, while the adjustable range covers legacy 2.5 V and 3.3 V rails. The Enable and Reset control features let you sequence the rail — pull Enable low to shut down the output, and monitor the Reset pin for power-good indication.
Package and thermal handling
Housed in an 8-TSSOP/8-MSOP package with an exposed pad (8-uMAX-EP/8-uSOP-EP), the MAX1792EUA18+T relies on that pad to pull heat away from the die. At 500 mA continuous output, the voltage drop across the pass element generates heat; the exposed pad must be soldered to a PCB copper plane to keep the junction temperature within the -40°C to 125°C operating range. Surface-mount assembly is straightforward — standard reflow profile for MSOP-8 with exposed pad.
Protection and reliability
Built-in over-current and over-temperature protection guard against output shorts and thermal runaway. The part is ROHS3 compliant and carries an active lifecycle status, so there is no last-time-buy risk for production builds.
