Charge current and cell-count flexibility
The 1.5 A maximum charge current is programmable via an external resistor, so the same PCB layout serves a 500 mA medical scanner or a 1.5 A power-tool charger by swapping one component. Supporting 1 to 4 series Li-Ion cells means the charger adapts to a 3.7 V single-cell headset or a 14.8 V four-cell battery pack without a different controller — the cell-count pin strapping sets the regulation voltage. A programmable timer terminates the charge cycle after a set interval, providing a safety timeout if the battery never reaches the full-voltage threshold — useful for fault-tolerant designs where a stuck cell could otherwise overheat.
28-SSOP surface-mount package
Housed in a 28-SSOP (0.209", 5.30 mm width) surface-mount package, the MAX1758EAI+ fits on a two-layer board with the thermal pad soldered to a copper pour for heat spreading during the 1.5 A charge cycle. Supplied in tubes, it is suited for hand-assembly or low-volume pick-and-place runs without reel-tape tooling changes.
