The MAX16909RATE/V+ is a step-down (buck) switching regulator from Analog Devices, qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1. Rated for 3 A continuous output current from a 3.5 V to 36 V input range, this part covers the 12 V battery rail through cold-crank dips down to 3.5 V and survives load-dump transients up to 36 V without an external clamp. Switching frequency is fixed at 400 kHz — a compromise between inductor size and efficiency. At this frequency the ripple current in a 10 µH inductor stays manageable, and the switching losses in the internal FET are low enough that the 3 A rating is realizable without a heatsink in the 16-TQFN package, provided the PCB copper area under the exposed pad is adequate.

The exposed pad is the primary thermal path; the datasheet's θJA figure assumes a minimum of four thermal vias under the pad connecting to an internal ground plane. Without those vias the junction temperature rises 20-30°C above the datasheet typical, which eats into the 125°C absolute-maximum margin on a hot day. The 5x5 mm footprint fits a compact automotive ECU layout where board space is tight.
