RS-485 line driver for harsh environments
The MAX13443EASA+T is a half-duplex RS-485/RS-422 transceiver from Analog Devices, packing one driver and one receiver into an 8-SOIC package. It handles data rates up to 10 Mbps over a single twisted pair, with receiver hysteresis of 25 mV to reject line noise.
10 Mbps half-duplex — what it means for the bus
At 10 Mbps the bit period is 100 ns. The 25 mV hysteresis keeps the receiver from chattering on a lightly loaded bus, but at this speed stub lengths on the PCB need to be under 6 inches to avoid reflections that eat into the noise margin. Half-duplex means the driver and receiver share the same pair — you need a direction-control signal from the UART or GPIO to toggle the driver enable. The 1/1 count is typical for point-to-point or multi-drop with one talker at a time.
