12-bit, 8-channel serial ADC in a 24-pin DIP
The MAX1270BCNG+ is a 12-bit data-acquisition system integrating an 8-channel input multiplexer, track/hold, successive-approximation ADC, and a serial interface in a single 24-pin DIP package. Its 110k samples-per-second throughput and SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible serial port let a microcontroller read eight analog channels over just four digital lines — no external mux or parallel bus needed.
Sampling rate and resolution — what they mean for your signal chain
12-bit resolution (4096 codes) gives a step size of 1.22 mV with a 5 V reference — sufficient for 0.1 % accuracy on a 1 V sensor output, but the effective resolution drops to about 10.5 ENOB at the full 110 kHz throughput due to ADC noise. 110 ksps means the input signal bandwidth is limited to roughly 55 kHz per the Nyquist criterion; for anti-alias filter design, the converter settles a full-scale step in 9 µs, so the front-end op-amp must settle to 12-bit accuracy within that window.
Single 5 V supply and serial interface simplify board layout
The serial interface runs at up to 5 MHz clock, so a 16-bit SPI read completes in 3.2 µs — the host MCU can poll eight channels in under 30 µs total, leaving the rest of the cycle for processing.
Through-hole PDIP — prototyping and long-life assembly
The 24-pin DIP (0.300-inch body width) is socket-friendly — insert into a machined-pin DIP socket for breadboard prototyping, or wave-solder directly for production. The 0.100-inch pitch is hand-solderable without a microscope. Tube packaging means the parts ship in anti-static tubes, 15 per tube; no reel or tape-and-reel handling for this through-hole format.
