12-bit SAR ADC with on-chip temperature sensor
The MAX1228BEEP+ is a 12-bit successive-approximation (SAR) ADC from Analog Devices, sampling at 300 kSPS over an SPI interface. It integrates a 6- or 12-channel input multiplexer configurable for differential or single-ended inputs, plus an on-chip temperature sensor — a combination that suits multi-sensor data-acquisition systems where one ADC digitises both external signals and die temperature for compensation. The single 5 V supply (analog and digital) keeps the power rail simple, and the 1:1 S/H-to-ADC ratio means the sample-and-hold is dedicated per conversion, not shared across channels — no throughput penalty when scanning multiple inputs.
Channel count and input configuration
The MUX-S/H-ADC architecture routes 6 differential or 12 single-ended inputs into the converter. Differential mode rejects common-mode noise on long sensor leads; single-ended mode doubles the channel count for monitoring local references or thermistors where common-mode is not a concern. Both external and internal reference options are available — the internal reference saves a BOM resistor and capacitor, while an external reference lets the system scale the full-scale range to match the sensor output span.
