Precision current sensing for shunt-based monitoring
The LTC6102CMS8#PBF is a single-channel current sense amplifier from Analog Devices, designed to amplify the small differential voltage across a shunt resistor and present it as a ground-referenced output. Its 3 µV input offset voltage and 60 pA input bias current keep the measurement error low enough for sub-milliohm shunt applications where the signal is in the microvolt range. The 200 kHz gain-bandwidth product sets the usable bandwidth for detecting current transients — fast enough to catch overcurrent events in a motor drive or battery charger before the silicon heats up, but not so wide that it amplifies switching noise from the power stage without filtering.

The 420 µA supply current is low enough for always-on monitoring in battery-powered equipment — the amplifier's own draw is a fraction of the load current it is measuring. The 1 mA output drive capability means the output can drive a downstream ADC input or a comparator directly, as long as the load resistance stays above a few kΩ. For longer traces or heavier loads, a buffer stage is advisable.
