Hotswap I2C buffer — what the 400kHz and 3mA mean for a live backplane
The LTC4300A-3CMS8#TRPBF is a 2-channel I2C buffer and accelerator purpose-built for hotswap applications — it lets you plug a card into a live I2C bus without corrupting the clock or data lines or pulling the bus low. Rated for 400 kHz data rate, it supports standard I2C Fast-mode operation. The 3 mA supply current is the chip's own draw; the bus pull-up resistors add to the total load, but the buffer isolates that from the backplane side during insertion. The 10 pF input capacitance per channel is low enough that adding the buffer to an existing bus doesn't significantly load the upstream master's rise time budget.
