What this -48V hot swap controller does on the board
The Analog Devices LTC4253IGN#PBF is a single-channel hot swap controller and sequencer designed for -48V power distribution, commonly found in telecom central-office equipment, base stations, and -48V backplane systems. It integrates programmable circuit breaker, current limit, fault timeout, overvoltage protection (OVP), and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) — all adjustable with external resistors and capacitors, so you set the protection thresholds to match the load and supply tolerance. The part does not include an internal MOSFET; you pair it with an external N-channel pass transistor sized for your load current and thermal budget.
Package and mounting
Housed in a 16-SSOP with a 3.90 mm body width and 0.154" pitch, this is a standard surface-mount package that reflows well and is hand-reworkable with hot air. The lead pitch is fine enough to need flux and a clean tip, but not so fine that you need an X-ray to check the joints. No exposed pad, so the thermal path is through the leads; keep the copper pour under the part connected to the -48V plane for heat spreading.
Temperature range and environment
Rated for -40°C to 85°C operating temperature, this covers indoor telecom racks, outdoor cabinets with climate control, and most industrial -48V plants. Not rated for under-hood automotive or downhole environments, but it is a solid fit for central-office and base-station line cards where the ambient stays within that band.
