12-bit SPI DAC with single-supply simplicity
The LTC1257CS8#PBF is a 12-bit, voltage-buffered digital-to-analog converter using an R-2R ladder architecture. It communicates over a standard SPI interface, making it a straightforward drop-in for any microcontroller with a spare SPI port. A single analog and digital supply spanning 4.75 V to 15.75 V powers the chip — no separate rails needed. This simplifies the power tree in mixed-signal designs, especially when the DAC shares a supply with the MCU or other logic.
Settling time and linearity for control loops
With a typical settling time of 6 µs, this DAC can update at rates above 150 kHz — fast enough for many closed-loop control applications like motor current setpoints or programmable voltage references. The full-scale transition settles within that window, so the output is valid before the next SPI frame arrives. Integral nonlinearity is ±3.5 LSB maximum, and differential nonlinearity is ±0.5 LSB maximum. The DNL spec guarantees monotonicity — every digital code step produces a positive voltage increment, which matters for servo loops and ramp generation where a missing code would cause a glitch.
Package and rework reality
Housed in an 8-lead SOIC (8-SO) package with 1.27 mm pitch, this DAC is hand-solderable and rework-friendly. The wide pin pitch means a standard iron or hot-air station can lift and replace the part without lifting pads — no micro-BGA trickery. Pin 1 is clearly marked on the package top. The commercial temperature range (0°C to 70°C) limits this variant to indoor, temperature-controlled environments. For industrial or automotive use, look at the industrial-temperature versions in the same family.
