The LT3973IDD-5#PBF is a step-down (buck) regulator from Analog Devices that delivers a fixed 5 V output at up to 750 mA. It takes an input from 4.2 V to 42 V, so it handles a 12 V or 24 V industrial rail cleanly, and survives transients up to the 42 V max without an external clamp — the internal switch's abs-max covers the surge. The switching frequency is programmable from 195 kHz to 2.15 MHz. Running at the high end shrinks the inductor and output capacitor, but pushes switching losses higher; at the low end you get better efficiency at light loads. The trade-off is yours to set with a single resistor.

Package and thermal — what the 10-DFN means on the bench

It comes in a 10-lead WFDFN with an exposed pad, 3 mm × 3 mm. The pad is the main thermal path — it needs a solid via array to the ground plane to pull heat out of the die. Without it, the 750 mA output at high input voltage will push the junction toward the 125°C limit. The part is not synchronous — it uses an external Schottky catch diode. That diode sits close to the switch node, so keep the loop from the IC's SW pin through the diode and output cap tight. A 1 A, 60 V Schottky in a SOD-123 or SMA package is the usual pairing. Shipping in tube, not tape-and-reel — if your pick-and-place feeder is set up for tape, you will need to transfer to a carrier or order the tape version separately. The tube is fine for bench prototyping and small runs.
