Charge pump inverter for bipolar supply generation
The ICL7662CBD+ is a charge pump voltage inverter from Analog Devices that generates a negative output voltage equal to the input voltage (-Vin) from a positive rail between 4.5 V and 20 V. Switching at 10 kHz, it uses two external capacitors — no inductor — to produce the inverted output, making it a compact solution for generating a negative bias rail on a mixed-signal board.
What the 10 kHz switching frequency means for your supply design
The 10 kHz switching rate sets the output ripple frequency. With the recommended external capacitors, the ripple amplitude is low enough for op-amp or ADC negative rails, but the charge pump's output impedance increases with load current — budget the voltage drop at your load current from the datasheet's output resistance curve. Because the topology is a charge pump, not a buck-boost, the output is simply -Vin with no regulation. For a 12 V input, the output is -12 V minus the voltage drop across the internal switches and the flying capacitor ESR.
