What a 15-bit current gauge means for your BOM
The DS2740U+T&R is a 15-bit current gauge — it digitizes the voltage drop across a sense resistor and reports the result over a serial interface. 15 bits gives 32,768 counts across the full-scale range, so the LSB size is set by the sense resistor value and the input range. For a 0.01 Ω sense resistor on a 2.7V supply, the LSB works out to roughly 8 µA per count, which is fine-grained enough to track a smartphone's sleep current or a IoT sensor's deep-sleep draw. The 2.7V to 5.5V input range covers single-cell Li-ion (3.0-4.2V), two-cell alkaline (3.0V), and regulated 3.3V or 5V rails — no external LDO needed if the battery voltage stays within this window.
