Parallel-interface RTC with battery backup and watchdog
The Maxim Integrated DS1558Y+ is a full-function real-time clock/calendar in a 48-LQFP package, communicating over a parallel bus — not the more common I²C or SPI. That parallel interface means it connects directly to the MCU's address/data bus without a serial-to-parallel conversion, which simplifies the layout on designs that already have a parallel memory or peripheral bus. The RTC tracks time in HH:MM:SS 24-hour format and date in YY-MM-DD-dd format, and it handles leap-year and Y2K rollover automatically. A built-in watchdog timer can reset the system if the host firmware stalls — a useful safeguard in unattended industrial controllers or remote data loggers. Operating temperature spans -40°C to 85°C, so it's rated for industrial enclosures, outdoor telecom cabinets, and engine-bay-adjacent electronics that see temperature swings. The 48-LQFP (7x7 mm) footprint is a surface-mount package that reflows without special handling.
