Binary counter RTC with integrated watchdog and trickle-charger
The Maxim Integrated DS1374C-33#T&R is a binary counter real-time clock (RTC) that tracks time as a 32-bit binary count rather than the more common BCD register format. It communicates over an I2C 2-wire serial interface and integrates an alarm, a square-wave output, a trickle-charger for backup battery management, and a watchdog timer — all in a 16-SOIC surface-mount package. Typical applications include industrial controllers, embedded systems with battery-backed timekeeping, and equipment that needs a programmable watchdog alongside the RTC.
Supply range and battery backup — covers 3.3V and 5V rails
The main supply range of 2.97V to 5.5V lets this part run from a 3.3V or 5V rail without an external regulator. The separate battery-supply input accepts 1.3V to 5.5V, so a coin cell or supercap keeps the counter alive when main power drops. Timekeeping current is 175 µA maximum across the full supply range — moderate draw that matters for battery-backed designs where every microamp counts.
Integrated features reduce external BOM
The on-chip trickle-charger maintains a rechargeable backup battery or supercap without a separate charging circuit. The watchdog timer can reset a hung system, and the square-wave output provides a programmable clock signal. These features save board space and simplify the BOM compared to a bare counter plus discrete supervisor and charger.
Active lifecycle and compliance
It is ROHS3 compliant, so it meets current EU lead-free requirements for new designs.
